OXFORDSHIRE FORECOURT WATCH
Petrol station drive-offs are costing garages and service stations owners £22m a year, and the cost of investigating these and other crimes is spiralling. Police can spend valuable time eliminating innocent number plate owners from their enquiries, and legitimate owners can often find it difficult to prove they weren't the ones committing speeding or parking offences.
Petrol stations within Cherwell and West Oxfordshire are signed up to Oxfordshire Forecourt Watch. The scheme allows the sharing of information, for example reported stolen registration numbers so that sightings can be reported. The scheme also encourages good working relationships between businesses and police. With the development of the 'bilking pack' forecourt staff are able to provide vital information on offenders and these improvements in evidence has contributed to convictions. (A 'bilking' is a term used to describe someone making off without payment).
